radar on traffic signs

Postby buoyman on Wed Sep 26, 2007 2:18 am

i have noticed in new york that construction signs have been outfitted at times with radar which emits a signal even though the sign is not being used to post the oncomming motorist's speed. is this used bythe police to set off radar detectors and thereby slow down the speed of those of us who have radar detectors and make the devices less reliable in detecting police using radar for enforcement? :?:

Hi,

There could be any number of reasons why this is happening. There are three that stick out in my head as being the most likely reasons.

The first thing I can think of is that there is a problem with the sign itself. Maybe it has not yet been hooked up or there is a wiring problem that nobody has reported it yet.

The other thing is the minumum speed rating. While the radar is always on and transmitting, it might not be able to pick up your speed. Many speed radars will not detect speeds below 10 mph. The Decatur Onsite 200 Radar Speed Display can read speeds down to 2 mph, but the display can only display as low as 10mph.

The last thing I can think of is that they're trying to gather traffic flow information. Products like the Decatur EZ Stat Pak, when connected to a Decatur Radar Trailer, can log traffic information for logistic purposes. For this, they may have intentionally disconnected the display to prevent vandalism.
Best Regards,

Ryan W.

RADAR ON TRAFFIC SIGNS

Postby BUOYMAN on Wed Oct 17, 2007 2:49 am

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY...I HAD A POLICE OFFICER EXPLAIN TO ME THAT THE SIGNS ARE USED AS A DECOY TO SET OFF RADAR DETECTORS AND THEREFORE SLOW DOWN TRAFFIC...HAS ANYONE HAD CONFIRMATION OF SIMILAR USES OF RADAR?

Speed display

I have run into similar things here in Europe with this pole mounted speed display Decatur OnSite 50. It seems to be solar powered as well. It is also transmitting while not showing speeds.
