POWER LINES

Postby TVGUY on Wed Nov 29, 2006 3:07 pm

I am in the TV business and I had a question concerning radar. We use microwave energy in our trucks to set up live from locations around town. We have always been told to stay away from power lines for several reasons. Sometimes they have trouble establishing a link with us because some high voltage power lines in the area interfere with our microwave signal. I heard that police radar uses microwave. Is it possible for the radar to give false readings when in close proximity to high voltage power lines, Especially when there are many grouped together?

power line interference

Power lines can and do interfere with all electronic systems, especially receivers. The degree of interference depends on power line voltage and current (voltage constant, current varies with load). Voltage depends on the line (main, secondary, house current).

High power lines can produce a false police radar reading, or may reduce detection range from a little to no detection of legitmate targets at all.
